Should you Link Build on Old Pages?
This episode of Whiteboard Friday with Cyrus covers link building on old pages. Old pages have already been indexed by Google and have been sitting stagnate for months or years. Cyrus goes over ways to add link juice to links sitting on old pages depending on if you have access to these pages. After SEOWizz, Jim Grice, studied the three categories of pages and links it is clear links on old pages are not as valuable as new.
Jim Grice concluded what we would already have guessed; the links from old content barely had impact. Like many SEO studies it’s extremely difficult to keep all variables constant; meaning different keywords are being targeted and they all have their own variables within their rankings. His results deviated enough to conclude text links and new content passes along the most link juice. Jim added text links with anchor texts to 15 of his blogs and the ranking spiked quickly. These rankings also dropped very quickly, he adds a side note; the site he was targeting now cannot be found. So this means Google devalued the links pretty quickly. I would not suggest link building on old pages unless you chance the content enough so it’s new in the eyes of search engines. Cyrus explains if you are dead set on linking from old content, change content and the title tag. If you don’t have the permissions to change the content, throw links from fresh pages to the old content page. This is clear reasoning why it is so important to keep fresh content on your site and pages. Click the icon on the right to watch SEOMoz Whiteboard Friday.
